How the section is built
TCF Canada listening has 39 questions in 35 minutes, rising in difficulty, and each recording is played once. Early questions are announcements and short dialogues; late ones are broadcast extracts, debates and implied opinions. CLB 7 needs 458; CLB 9 needs 523.

“In listening, the right answer is rarely hiding in the word you just heard.”
Before the recording
Technique 1 — read the options first
In a few seconds, spot what separates the four answers (a place? a time? an opinion?). You then know exactly what to listen for.
Technique 2 — guess the situation
Who is speaking? Where? Why? A station announcement, a voicemail, an interview. Context narrows the possibilities.
Technique 3 — read the question word
"Pourquoi" wants a cause, "que propose" a suggestion, "quelle est l'attitude" a tone. Many errors are a perfect understanding of the wrong thing.
While it plays
Technique 4 — beware the echo
If an option repeats a word you heard, check it twice. Correct answers are usually rephrased: "le train est supprimé" becomes "le trajet n'aura pas lieu".
Technique 5 — listen for the swing words
Mais, pourtant, en fait, finalement, sauf que, j'avoue que… The information that matters very often comes right after.
Technique 6 — listen to tone as well as words
Irony, hesitation, enthusiasm: for questions about the speaker's attitude, intonation is sometimes the only clue.
Technique 7 — do not try to understand everything
An unknown word is not a lost answer. Chase the information the question asks for, not the whole recording.
A classic trap
Recording: « J'avais prévu d'aller au cinéma ce soir, mais avec ce qu'ils annoncent comme neige, je crois que je vais plutôt rester tranquille à la maison. »
Question: What will the speaker do tonight?
A) Go to the cinema — trap: the words you heard · B) Stay home · C) Go out despite the snow · D) Watch the weather
The right answer follows "mais" and rephrases "à la maison" as "chez elle".
Between questions
Technique 8 — the three-second rule
Hesitating? Tick your best guess within three seconds and move to the next set of options. One missed question must never cost two.
Technique 9 — never leave a blank
Answer everything: a guess costs nothing more than an empty box.
Technique 10 — the routine that actually moves the score
