The official length, paper by paper
| Paper | Length | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 35 min | 35 min |
| Reading | 60 min | 1 h 35 |
| Writing | 60 min | 2 h 35 |
| Speaking | 12 min | 2 h 47 |
These times are strict: the clock does not stop, and time you do not use in one paper does not carry over to the next. For what each paper contains, see the four TCF Canada papers.
Exam day, hour by hour (a typical morning)
The exact schedule depends on your centre and is written on your convocation. This is the pattern we see most often:
| Time | What happens | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| 8:15 | Arrival, ID check | Bring the same ID as in your immigration file |
| 8:40 | Seating, instructions, personal belongings stored | Phone off and packed away — no exceptions |
| 9:00 | Listening (35 min) | Adjust your headset before the first recording |
| 9:40 | Reading (60 min) | Check the clock every ten questions |
| 10:45 | Short transition | Drink water; do not replay your answers in your head |
| 10:55 | Writing (60 min) | Keep 25 minutes for task 3 |
| As scheduled | Speaking (12 min) | Warm your voice up by speaking French before you go in |
The real challenge is stamina, not the clock
Two and a half hours of unbroken concentration in a foreign language is a marathon. Most candidates lose accuracy at the end of the reading paper and during writing task 3 — exactly the parts that carry the most points.
Sit at least three full mock exams
Run the papers back to back with no extra breaks, at the time of your booking. It is the only way to train your brain for the real duration.
Eat light but enough
A breakfast with slow-release carbohydrates. An energy dip in the middle of the reading paper costs points.
Have a timing plan for each paper
Split your 60 writing minutes into blocks. Without a plan, everyone underestimates the last task.
“At the TCF you do not run out of time to think. You run out of energy for the last task.”
After the exam: results and validity
- Results: your centre gives you the publication date. Expect several weeks between the exam and your certificate.
- Validity for IRCC: your results must be less than 2 years old when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.
- Retaking: a new sitting means all four papers again, with a minimum gap between sessions. Check with your centre.
To read your results once they arrive: what counts as a good TCF Canada score.
What comes after the exam
- Write down the results date your centre gave you
- Check each score against your programme’s threshold
- Convert your results into CLB before creating your profile
- Count 2 years of validity from the test date
