The straight answer
No, you cannot normally sit the official TCF Canada for free. The test is delivered by centres approved by France Éducation international, which set and collect the fee (usually between CA$340 and CA$450 in Canada — details in TCF Canada price).
“Prepare for free. Just be wary of anyone promising a free result.”
The rare cases where the exam may cost you nothing
- Newcomer settlement organisations: some, particularly in francophone minority communities, can point you to funding or cover part of the fee. Ask locally.
- Employers: a company hiring through Francophone Mobility, or supporting your permanent residence, may agree to reimburse the test.
- Francisation and training programmes: some include an official assessment at the end of the course.
None of this is automatic or universal: ask explicitly, in writing, before you register.

How to use free resources without wasting months
The problem with free resources is not their quality — it is scatter. This is the order we recommend:
- 1.Diagnosis: sit one full free series to find your CLB per skill.
- 2.Priority: identify the skill furthest from the threshold your programme requires.
- 3.Routine: 30 minutes of listening (RFI, TV5MONDE) every single day.
- 4.Production: one piece of writing and one recording a week, reviewed against the marking criteria.
- 5.Control: a new full series every two or three weeks to measure progress.
