The three letters, in one line
If you typed what does TCF mean into Google, you already have the short answer. But if the question came up at all, it is probably because an immigration form, a prefecture or a university asked you for this test — and the short answer stops being enough.
TCF[te.se.ɛf]noun · acronym
- 1.Test de connaissance du français — "French knowledge test". An official language test designed by France Éducation international.
- 2.By extension: the level certificate it delivers, valid for 2 years, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery).
Not to be confused with the DELF, which is a diploma — and never expires.
The test measures what you can do in French across four skills. It is scored, not passed or failed, which is exactly why immigration departments like it: a score converts cleanly into their own scales.
One acronym, five exams: which one is yours?
This is where candidates lose money. The versions share a method, but they are not interchangeable: each organisation accepts only some of them.
| Version | Who it is for | Sections |
|---|---|---|
| TCF Canada | Federal permanent residence (Express Entry), citizenship, Francophone Mobility. Accepted by IRCC. | 4, all compulsory |
| TCF Québec | Immigration to Québec (PSTQ, PEQ). Accepted by the MIFI. | À la carte — you pick |
| TCF IRN | France: multi-year residence permit, resident card, citizenship. | 4 skills, adapted format |
| TCF tout public | Study, work, personal assessment. | 3 compulsory + 2 optional |
| TCF DAP | Applying to the first year of a French bachelor degree. | Compulsory + writing |

| Section | Format | Time | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 39 multiple-choice questions | 35 min | 100–699 |
| Reading | 39 multiple-choice questions | 60 min | 100–699 |
| Writing | 3 tasks | 60 min | 0–20 |
| Speaking | 3 tasks with an examiner | 12 min | 0–20 |
Each recording is played once. Each writing task has a word range you must respect. And the whole thing runs without a real break — stamina matters as much as grammar.
Can you fail the TCF?
Technically, no. There is no pass mark: everyone leaves with a score. The real question is whether that score clears the bar your project sets.
- Express Entry (federal skilled workers): CLB/NCLC 7 in all four skills.
- Canadian citizenship: CLB/NCLC 4 in speaking and listening.
- French citizenship: B2 since 1 January 2026.
Our TCF Canada score chart converts every score into CLB/NCLC levels, skill by skill.
“The TCF does not measure whether your French is good. It measures whether you can prove a precise level on a precise day.”
